The character in crisis in this scenario was a White male, in his early 30s, displaying a bruised eye and rib injuries (see Fig. 1). His Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms are heightened by cannabis intoxication, and he is in crisis believing that people responsible for invading his home a few months ago have returned to attack him. Participants began the scenario at the front door of the residence, and the scenario takes place inside a hallway and room in the residence. During the scenario, the character in crisis grabs a nearby baseball bat to protect himself from intruders. The character in crisis was designed to demonstrate de-escalation behaviours in response to participants engaging in DePICTTM competencies, and escalation when de-escalation strategies were not employed by officers. After scenario completion, participants debriefed for 5 min with assessors.

Roberts Wesleyan University’s on-campus clinic uses virtual reality to help students, faculty and outside community members tackle short-term anxiety.
